A Trip To Brooklyn

Sunday, February 14th, 2016

Dear Friends:

Here is the article, written by me in the summer of ’91, and describing my trip with Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, a’h, together with his youngest son, Yotam, and our encounter with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Reb Menachem Mendel Schneerson, a’h. [NOTE: If you scroll down to the end, you will see the video of the Rebbe’s words to Reb Zalman.] Gabbai Seth Fishman

A TRIP TO BROOKLYN

Reb Zalman wanted Yotam to meet the Rebbe and also wanted to give the Rebbe a copy of Spiritual Intimacy: A Study of Counseling in Hasidism, a book Zalman wrote about the holy love that exists between a Rebbe and his students. I was to come along to help in the trip, and to ask the Rebbe for a blessing for myself and my wife Anna on our then, upcoming wedding.

On Sunday, August 18th, 1991, at 8AM, I met Reb Zalman and Yotam, and we set out on the drive to Brooklyn. I was curious to learn about Zalman’s time spent in the Lubavitch community and asked many questions as we drove.

“When did you first meet the Lubavitcher Rebbe?,” I asked Reb Zalman.

Tamid Echad

Monday, August 18th, 2014

As Reb Zalman (ztzvkl) would sing, (click here): Tamid Echad / Always and Forever One!

~~~
Reb Zalman (olav hashalom) was our very heart.
He made it seem easy to make us a whole
       between Jews, across divides, a message of echad.
If we’re so universalist, so why be Jewish?
Every religion is a vital organ — including ours.
Could a body become all liver? Absurd!
Moshiach, Christ, the Mahdi, the Avatar and Maitreya
       will all come to an eco-kosher sudenyu. Oy, what a sudenyu!
When we’ve receded to a place where we seem insignificant to God,
       it’s a heresy greater than thinking God is small.
You are not an “oops” of God!
In God’s present your lifetime has significance!
Oh! Secularist’s nascent spirituality!
Oh! Popular believer: Become “shiviti Hashem l’negdi tamid”!
So whether:
Religious or Secular,
Hasid or Mitnaged,
Mystic or Atheist,
Panentheist or Pantheist,
       (“Kinderlachen, geh gesunderheit!”)
Renewal, Frum, Liberal, Ultra-Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Secular Humanist, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Native, Mammal, Bird, Reptile, Micro-organism, Charm, Rock, Planet, Galaxy, Black hole:
How can we get it together? Together!
Tamid Echad! Always and Forever One!
A Note For The Shavuot Retreat Participants
Friday, May 17th, 2013
I am sad to leave this wonderful retreat. It was a fantastic time filled with riches. Thanks to Reb Zalman, Eve, Reb Marcia, Hazzan Jack and the staff of Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center for making it so special.
At the closing circle, I was surprised and delighted when Reb Zalman mentioned the work I’ve been doing at this website, JewishRenewalHasidus.org / JRHasidus.org. Here you will find some of Reb Zalman’s most precious teachings along with translations of Hebrew writings never before made available in English.
Keys to the Wisdom of Truth
ספר מפתחי חכמת האמת
Keys to the Wisdom of Truth
Rabbi Saul Baumann
Introduction and Commentaries by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
Editor: Rabbi Shaya Isenberg
http://www.alephcanada.ca/store/#!/Reb-Zalman-Writings/c/5437258/offset=0&sort=normal
This book contains Reb Zalman’s lectures on a small Sefer written by a twenty-three year old genius named Saul Baumann.
Baumann was a Chabad Chossid who lived in Warsaw, Poland and was killed in the Holocaust.  He was educated at both Chabad and Slobodka (a mitnagdishe Yeshivah).  Through the lens of Kabbalah, Baumann brings harmony to the opposing traditions of the two communities in which he was trained, i.e. the spiritual heirs to the Vilna Gaon and Reb Shneur Zalman of Liadi.
In his lectures, Reb Zalman shares his thoughts on Paradigm Shift and required updates for spiritual connection to remain alive and relevant within the context of traditional Judaism.  Kabbalah is a framework we can build upon to take us into a renewed Judaism.
Zalman shows us how the tradition can help us to reach to the places of discovering Judaism’s path into the future and how we can integrate from those places of shifted paradigms.  The updates can connect us in new ways to traditional understandings of Jewish Mysticism.
Comment and Prayer for our Beloved Reb Zalman
Wednesday, May 30th, 2012
Just yesterday morning, the following comment was made by a participant during the Q&A at the end of Davvening with Reb Zalman.  (From the 5772 Shavuot retreat at Isabella Freedman with Reb Zalman and Eve, as overheard by Gabbai Seth Fishman, BLOG Editor.):
“Reb Zalman, I was thirteen with a Bar Mitzvah and then I sort of dropped out of my Jewish stuff.
Then, I was twenty-nine, and Bobbie Kennedy was killed, (I was working for him).  I went to Mexico.
(I think that [the assassination] might have had something to do with it) – I wrote you a letter.
You started sending me tapes, songs and chassidic…, you were sending me cassettes of songs, Chassidic songs and stories.  And you kept reaching out.
You opened the doors for me, (years later I worked with you), you opened the doors to this rich tradition.  It’s vast and full of love and joy and wisdom.
I’m so grateful to you.
We’re all grateful to you.
I’m so glad, I’m so glad you’re alive and kicking and doing what you’re doing.  And keep on doing it for a long time, please.
AMEN (applause and shouts).”
Yesod Sheb’Yesod
Wednesday, May 11th, 2011
This year, Yesod Sheb’Yesod falls on Sunday night, May 30th, 2011.
Schemuel writes:
“I need to come up with a speech on 41st day of Omer, which is Yesod sheb’Yesod.  Could you give me some ideas/ thoughts for such a speech please?”
Gabbai Seth Fishman‘s reply:
The week of Yesod is associated with Yosef the tzadik and Tamar the tzadika.
Through Yesod, we funnel God’s kingdom into our plane.  It is about connecting the higher worlds to this one.
Yesod is the last Sefirah of Ze’er Anpin ( זעיר אנפין)
 [NOTE:  Ze’er Anpin / little face, a shorthand for the Sefirot associated with the Vav of the divine name, viz. Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod.]
It is on the central pillar of Keter, Tiferet, Yesod, Malchut.  It is thus a vital connector for flows from above to below and below to above.
Here’s a way to think about it:
Reminder: Hattarat Nedarim
Sunday, August 29th, 2010
I was asked by Reb Zalman to send along a reminder to you for Hattarat Nedarim / The Release of Vows service, (best done before Rosh Hashanah which begins this year on Wednesday Night, September 8th, 2010).
My first thought was, “Dear Reb Zalman.  But I put this out there already!”  (cf., Hattarat Nedarim / The Release Of Vows,  http://www.JewishRenewalHasidus.org/wordpress/?p=113).
But then I thought:  This is not a thing to just read and file.  It matters not if we did this last year, or the year before, or we did not.
What matters is that here we are again.  Rosh Hashanah will soon be here and we will be faced with the opportunity to do personal work as we enter Ha-Aseret Y’mei Teshuvah / the Ten Days of Repentance.  We will do the Hattarat Nedarim each year before Rosh HaShanah.  Then, in subsequent years, we will do it again, and again, (and God-willing, each time from a higher level).
So what is involved?
